When people think about concussion recovery, they often focus exclusively on the brain. But from a BOS (Body Operating System) perspective, the story is rarely that simple.
Many concussion symptoms may persist not only because of what happened inside the skull, but also because of how the injury affected the body’s interconnected systems—particularly the cervical spine.
The Overlooked Role of the Neck
The upper cervical spine serves as a critical communication hub between the brain and body. Following a concussion, even relatively small forces can create strain patterns throughout the neck, cranial base, dura, and surrounding soft tissues.
These restrictions can alter how information is processed and transmitted through the nervous system, potentially contributing to symptoms such as:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Visual strain
- Balance disturbances
- Motion sensitivity
- Difficulty concentrating
- Neck pain and stiffness
In many cases, imaging studies may appear normal, yet patients continue to experience significant symptoms. This is because functional restrictions often cannot be seen on standard imaging.
Understanding the System, Not Just the Symptom
At BOS, we view the body as an interconnected system rather than a collection of isolated parts. A concussion can create compensatory patterns throughout multiple systems, including:
- The cervical spine
- The cranial and dural systems
- The autonomic nervous system
- The visual and vestibular systems
- The fascial network
When these systems are unable to communicate efficiently, the body may struggle to regulate symptoms and return to normal function.
Looking Beyond the Brain
Persistent post-concussion symptoms are not always driven by the brain alone. Restrictions within the cervical spine and surrounding tissues may continue to influence neurological function, balance, visual processing, and overall recovery.
By evaluating how these systems interact, clinicians can often identify contributors that may otherwise be overlooked.
A Systems-Based Approach to Recovery
The BOS framework encourages clinicians to look beyond symptom management and investigate the underlying factors influencing recovery.
Rather than asking only, “What symptom is the patient experiencing?” we ask: What systems are no longer communicating effectively, and why?
When the cervical spine, cranial structures, and nervous system are assessed as part of a larger integrated system, clinicians gain a broader understanding of the factors that may be contributing to persistent symptoms.
Concussion recovery is rarely about a single structure. It is about restoring communication throughout the entire Body Operating System so the body can return to its optimal state of function.
